Porter's 5 Forces: Higher Education
Porter's Five Forces Analysis challenges organizations by grouping them into Rivalry, Bargaining Power of Supplier Power, Bargaining Power of Buyers, Competitors, Threat of Substation, and Threat of Entry. School Districts competitiveness satisfy the parents, students and teachers with their quality resources and the ability to surpass any schools in the competition.
Bargaining Power of Supplier Power: If a Teachers or Faculty is able to "satisfy" the school Principal by showing an important resource that the staff can utilize to better improve the students education, there would be a space for the Teacher to negotiate with the Principal. The teacher is the competitor and the Principal has the option to satisfy the requirement.
Bargaining Power of Buyer Power: The "buyers" ability to influence companies to reduce prices and improve their products/quality. In a school settings, parents can form their opinions on whether the teachers meet their satisfactory requirement. If the parents are content with a teacher, the teacher competitiveness is much higher.
Teachers competitiveness can be measures by:
- Their teaching ability
- Language skills
- Ability to communicate with student's parents
- How well teachers can master different teaching models
- Personality Traits (are they good or bad teacher)
- How well the satisfy Principal and Parents requirement.
Threat of Entry: When competitors enter into a market that offering the same products. Teachers are the main competitors. They observe new staff who enter the schools that may possess new skills, abilities or characteristics. Those who already hold a place in the school possess new abilities, they would be less threatened, and their competitiveness will be higher.
Threat of Substitute: When companies are forced to competed with organizations that are producing substitute services. In this case, teachers are less likely to be replace, this would result in the competitive to increase.
Rivalry increases the tension of competition when an organization feels pressures or see an opportunity to improve their status. Teachers have to compete amongst each others and they cannot gain any advantages unless they excel in their abilities.
